At this year’s IEEE++ 5G Summit trade fair and conference on May 12, 2022 in Dresden, albis-elcon system Germany GmbH, CampusGenius GmbH and Smart Systems Hub GmbH together with the Saxony Trade and Invest Corporation (Wirtschaftsförderung Sachsen GmbH – WFS) will present Germany’s first open IoT-LAB 5G campus network. This 5G network serves companies to test and implement new technologies and applications for 5G wireless networks.

At the joint booth of the 5G Summit, the companies involved will show how 5G projects can be advanced by successfully pooling cross-sectoral knowledge.

The aim is to test innovations in order to deliver application-oriented solutions, thereby strengthening the European ecosystem for private networks in 5G telecommunications. Among others, the 5G OPERA project is also supported. 5G OPERA is developing a Franco-German ecosystem in the field of private 5G networks (“campus networks”) based on an open architecture.

Saxony Trade and Invest Corporation (WFS) with focus on the entire value chain

5G/6G has particular importance for the high-tech ecosystem in Saxony. “Saxon companies, research facilities and academic institutions cover all areas of the value chain – from semiconductor material over electronics to software – and can therefore make essential contributions to the industrial use of the 5G/6G technology. This technology opens up a new data infrastructure that enables real-time applications, such as the complex production automation of entire factories as digital twin process control or virtual maintenance. This creates a large and interesting market, and Saxony wants to participate in its growth,” says WFS Managing Director Thomas Horn. The WFS supports the siting of companies as well as networking and the exchange of relevant players, including those who act in the field between technology suppliers and users.

Mobile 5G Campus Networks

Strong partnerships are success factors in an increasingly interdependent and globalised world. The Smart Systems Hub is based on this awareness. It actively develops and promotes cooperation between companies. Cooperation and co-innovation are essential key components for complex challenges in Industry 4.0 in order to successfully create complete solutions.

The private 5G network in the Internet of Things (IoT) laboratory of the Smart Systems Hub, which was realised in cooperation with albis-elcon and CampusGenius, will be presented at the joint booth. As a testbed – i.e. real environment – for the development of new integration solutions, it is an integral part of the infrastructure of the IoT Lab. It offers partner companies the opportunity to test and implement new technologies using a 5G wireless network.

This infrastructure is also of great importance in the pioneering 5G OPERA project, in which the Smart Systems Hub is involved. The objective is to ensure a vendor-neutral integration of both hardware and software.

The Smart Systems Hub shows a robotisation project as developed use case, which was realised together with the partners Wandelbots and SAP. By combining the robot with the 5G network and suitable software, implementation costs can be significantly reduced and processes will become much more flexible. This applies in particular to the combination of several robots. A completely new business model is opening up with “Robots as a Service”.

5G campus networks offer improved radio quality and higher network security

5G campus networks are characterised by better radio quality paired with greater network security, improved data control, larger bandwidth, low latency and high flexibility in terms of service quality. In this way, customers make decisive advances in automation and networking in their companies. In addition to the actual infrastructure, albis-elcon offers its customers tailor-made integration of existing devices and systems into the 5G campus solution. The company will thus become a full solution provider for 5G campus networks. “We see a significant growth market in 5G campus networks with end-to-end integration of the existing device landscape. The great interest in our approach as an ecosystem with partners and integration expertise confirms that we are on the right track,” says Werner Neubauer, Managing Director of albis-elcon and CEO of the UET Group.

In order to increase efficiency and agility, the architecture in communication networks will change in the coming years. Disaggregated architectures enable open operation of hardware, operating system software and applications. Albis-elcon is showing the uSphir Software Suite as an open ecosystem platform, which already enables the operation of Intel- and arm-based hardware as well as a multitude of network and security applications. The operation of an own 5G core network is one of them.
