IOT System

Use Case: Siren alarm on golf courses

Together with our partner Kockum Sonics, aconnic has developed a remote control system, for example, for lightning warning on golf courses. The system consists of a web server, a website, and one or more remote control devices that connect the actual siren control to the internet via mobile networks. The entire configuration and operation can be easily and conveniently managed through a smartphone.

Misuse is prevented through cryptographically secured protocols and accounts with well-defined permissions. The system can be readily adapted for other safety-critical applications, such as monitoring a tank storage facility.

Communication Technology

Use Case: Ultrasound Modem

The mission of our client, Swiss Ocean Tech, is to ensure secure anchoring. To achieve this, they have developed a patented technology that monitors the anchor using various sensors. As a partner of Swiss Ocean Tech, aconnic supported the development of an ultrasound modem for underwater communication over distances of up to 300 meters.

Within a very short time, a concept had to be validated and improved using Matlab simulations. This included managing multipath propagation, implementing adaptive Doppler shift correction, and forward error correction of the telegram data. The next step was the realization of a functional prototype, featuring the final analog front-end and a Matlab receiver on a PC. Following initial real-time measurements, the reception algorithms were optimized and ultimately implemented in a microcontroller and FPGA. Within a few weeks, prototypes were produced, followed by the realization of a small pilot series in our prototype workshop.

High Frequency Technology

Use Case: Energy-Efficient 60GHz Transmission System

As a feasibility study for one of our clients, we developed a broadband, low-power wireless transmission link operating in the 60GHz band, delivering a continuous net data rate of over 1Gbps.

Custom-designed antennas were developed specifically for this application. Both the transmitter and receiver utilize modulators from Analog Devices. Due to limited power availability at the transmitter, the system employs QPSK modulation with a channel equalizer implemented at the receiver. The entire baseband signal processing for the prototype was carried out in Matlab.

Analogue Hardware Design

Use Case: 1.2 kW Power Amplifier

The Swiss alert system Polyalert is operated by the Federal Office for Civil Protection. For this system, aconnic has developed a parameterizable Class-D amplifier with an output power of up to 1.2 kW for our partner Kockum Sonics, designed to drive the loudspeakers.

A significant challenge was addressing the wide range of topics such as overvoltage protection, galvanic isolation, power electronics with currents exceeding 50A, digital signal processing, firmware, standards, and complex layout design.

Projects

E-TICKETING

eTicketing of the Future
No active check-in/check-out is required—just simple passive “Be-In/Be-Out.” BIBO is the name of this visionary technology developed by aconnic. Simply board the train and start your journey without purchasing a ticket. The train automatically detects the distance traveled. It doesn’t get more convenient than this.

GSM TECHNOLOGY

M2M Emergency Watch Based on GSM and Cloud Services
The M2M solution of the innovative emergency watch by Limmex is based on GSM and specially developed cloud services. For aconnic, a particular challenge was to ensure robust hands-free communication and uninterrupted GSM connectivity within the tight space constraints of the watch.

PAYING VIA NFC

The Wallet of the Future
Today, payment systems at the POS (Point of Sale) are equipped with NFC readers. This means that credit cards no longer need to be inserted into the reader to make a payment. As a result, the modern wallet can be integrated into any wearable, such as a phone, watch, or bag. aconnic has developed a demo solution in collaboration with partners.

LEICA VIVA CONTROLLER

High-Performance Data Communication in the Field
The powerful geodata controller from Leica Geosystems was developed by aconnic in collaboration with Leica Geosystems. Its highlight: the flexible radio system with fully integrated wireless antenna technology for Bluetooth®, WLAN, GSM/GPRS.

PRECISE LOCATION

Secure Radio Keys
As part of a research project, aconnic developed a distance measurement solution with an accuracy of approximately 30 cm using an FMCW radar in the 2.4 GHz band. Essentially, a chirp signal is transmitted by the reader, received by the tag, and returned with precise delay. It has been demonstrated that an authentication protocol can be integrated into this precise distance measurement, significantly enhancing the security of radio keys compared to current systems.

SMART METERING

Monitoring Electricity Consumption with an Android App
The ewz posed the question: Can electricity consumption be effectively reduced through visualization, i.e., by making it visible? To answer this question, aconnic developed a Smart Metering Application (SMA) for Android tablets. The ewz study, dated July 1, 2013, reveals that households using an SMA statistically consume less electricity than those in the control group.

MOBILITY AND LOGISTICS

Mobile Communication on the SBB Rail Network
“The MiniLEU S11 units ordered by the SBB are equipped with solar panels, making them completely self-sufficient. This saves the SBB approximately 876,000 kilowatt hours of electricity annually,” reads the success story from Siemens Mobility and Logistics about the innovation developed with the involvement of aconnic. The innovative signal unit wirelessly transmits information from track signals to rail vehicles via the Eurobalise.

RFID BEAMER

Glucose, Lactate & Glutamate Beamer
The CITSens Bio sensors from c-cit.ch wirelessly transmit glucose, lactate, and glutamate levels for online analysis to a remote computer. The wireless solution developed by aconnic is based on RFID technology and ZOMOFI®.

ACTIVE RFID

Zone Monitoring with Zomofi
The innovative Zomofi product for zone monitoring was developed by aconnic. It is based on active RFID technology and has a wide range of applications. Key highlights: the sensor tags.

CRYPTOGRAPHY

Highly Available and Highly Secure Certificates
For the implementation of the performance-based heavy vehicle fee (LSVA) by the Federal Customs Administration (OZD), aconnic developed key security components: providing a Certificate Authority (CA), and highly available, highly secure certificates and certificate directories, as well as online access to secure storage on smart cards and devices (On-Board Units) through specialized client APIs.
